SUPERSCRABBLE GAMES 5-24-18

Standard

MAY 24, 2018, THURSDAY, 10:00a.m. – SUPERSCRABBLE CLUB GAMES

Pairing will start at 10:00a.m.  We’ll sing belated or advance “Happy Birthday” during lunchtime for those whose birthday falls in May and early June: TOM TITUS (May 26) and ESTHER KISICH (June 6). There’s a special gift for all celebrants who are able to show up.  Please email maliha.mendoza@gmail.com, text 714-654-4308, or leave a voicemail at this number 714-544-4746.

1st Game Category: What are you wearing? This category is also the ‘ALL DAY CATEGORY’.  For example:  if you’re wearing a pair of shoes.  SHOES is acceptable; if you’re wearing a makeup, MAKEUP is good; COSMETICS is good; LIPSTICK, MASCARA, SANDALS, SWEATER, JACKET, PANTS, SLACKS, SOCKS, BRAZIER, WRISTWATCH, PAJAMA, PYJAMAS, PONCHO, FEDORAS, RINGS, NECKLACE, etc.

2nd Game Category: Words ending with –TION.  Some examples: ACTION, NOTION, NATION, OPERATION, RELATION, SITUATION, TRANSLATION, IMAGINATION, ORGANIZATION, AMBITION, POSITION, POLLUTION, REVOLUTION. SOLUTION, ATRACTION, AFFECTION, CORRECTION, FICTION, CONSTRUCTION, CAUTION, OPTION, UNCTION, JUNCTION, PORTION, SECTION, BENEDICTION, etc.

3rd Game Category:  What are you eating?  APPLES, BANANAS, GRAPES, PEANUTS, WALNUTS, PISTACHIO, PASTA, SHRIMP, WINGS, CHICKEN, SPAGHETTI, ARTICHOKE, LONGAN, PEARS, SUSHI, CAKES, COOKIES, BISCOTTI, VEGETABLES, FRUITS, SQUID, KUMQUAT, PINEAPPLE, MANGO, QUAIL, BEEFS, CANDIES, etc.

LEARN a long word each day.  This is my favorite:  STRAIGHFORWARDNESS which equals 18 letters.  You may start FOR, or WARD (but make sure it’s somewhere in the middle of the board leaving two spaces before reaching grid 21 after hooking NESS). Who knows?  Your opponent might hook STRAIGHT in front of FORWARD.  Thinking this way makes me so excited I can’t explain why.  Adding ES at the end of straightforwardness makes it STRAIGHFORWARDNESSES=21 letters.

The instant reward for a word with 14 to 15+ letters is now worth $175.  The 12- to 13-letter word category will have $75 on 5-24-18.  To qualify for an instant reward, the word must contain 5 letters or more.  Winners of 3 games get $25, and each bingo word is worth $1. Highest-point bingo is $5, high-point game is 1¢ per point [1250 pts = $12.50], highest-point cum is $10, and highest-point non-bingo word is $5.  Winners of 3 games are not qualified to win the high-point game and the high-point cum.  Everyone will get a chance to win something and have fun. Study the assigned categories to enjoy more awards. THE EXAMPLES BELOW are incomplete; some singular or plural variants are missing.  If DON PLATT is here, he’ll announce the categories.  If not, volunteers are welcome.

JUNE 21, 2018, 10:00am will be our next meeting.  A reminder will be posted a week prior to the event.

RESULTS: 3-22-18 Superscrabble Games

CONGRATS to all winners!  PAT REED won 3 games, and finishing with 11 bingos.  AMNON MEYERS won 3 games, 10 bingos, and 1 (one) High-Scoring-Bingo MERCHANT=185.  Please note that the 3-game winners are excluded from the High-Cum and High-Point game awards to exercise fairness amongst players.

DAVID PODER won the High-Game points=1055, the High-Cum=2880, and finishing with 12 bingos. NOTE: Awards will be in an envelope for pick up next time.  YUKI LORITZ won the Mostest Bingos=16, after 3 games.  DON PLATT won the High-Scoring Non=Bingo word ADZED=97.  RENÉE KAHN played 5 category words; she did it again, beating NAJAT REIKES who found 4 category words.  FLASH announcement:  An additional prize of $5 will be awarded to whoever plays the mostest bingo words after 3 games.  This is an encouragement for players to study their 7-letter-words more often.  For example:  If a player has 16 bingo words, he/she will receive an additional $5 for the achievement.  However, please remember that Superscrabble Club was created with the intent to learn more long and longer words which is an extremely challenging brain exercise.

We missed Gretchen Cowan, but wishing her safe travel home. Also enjoyed seeing Lynn Gunn looking great and recovering from all cancer screening which she passed.  Thanks to the LORD of the universe, the highest MIND.  We sang belated “Happy Birthday” to Joanie Scafuto and Fern Trausch, and advance H.Bday to Don Platt who will be celebrating his birthday on March 30. Thanks to Gary Moss for playing double due to uneven pairing at the start of the games.  The prize distribution totaled $246.  We all had a fantastic time. Everyone should now feel that the Superscrabble Games is not just a convergence of intelligent scrabblers; it is more like a “family-get-together,” a very informal and friendly atmosphere.  Like in your  own home, you should feel free to look for something you need in the kitchen, or pick a fresh herb from the garden for your special tea and medicinal libation.

Superscrabble Games 2-22-18

Standard

FEBRUARY 22, 2017, THURSDAY, 10:00a.m.  We are meeting at the usual venue:  2130 Chandler Drive, Tustin, CA 92782. Turn into Township and go through the guard gate–not the Golf Course! It has been such a busy period for me trying to put the place together since the middle part of December 2017.  Thanks we were able to hold our meeting in the same venue last month Jan 2018–all renovations are done. I hope you are all well, and ready to resume our monthly unofficial “tournament” to keep our brains awake and working even at this time of autumnal passage in our lives.  Please let me know whether or not you can make it, just so we’ll have enough tables set up as well as food to eat for everyone.  Kindly respond to this email, leave a voice mail, or text a message at 714-654-4308. We rejoice the recovery of Pat Reed who was very sick during the last few weeks since New Year’s Day, and we all hope to see her join all of us this time.  We will sing “Happy Birthday” to celebrate in advance the Bdays of Jamila Atcha (2-25), Chora Eilertsen (2/26), and Najat Reikes (2/27).  It would be wonderful if Chora is in California these days (from Vancouver Island) to reach here the day before 2/22.  A place is ready for her to stay at Maliha’s home.

The newcomers are always welcome specially the young, handsome, and beautiful ones.  Newcomers will be allowed to refer to the “CHEAT SHEET,” which Maliha will give as soon as the games begin.  Nothing to despair about, because there are always volunteers to help and teach how to play the game.  The instant reward for a word with 14 to 15+ letters is now worth $160.  The pot for 12- to 13-letter-word category has $55. To qualify for an instant reward, the word must contain 5 letters or more. THE EXAMPLES BELOW are incomplete; some singular or plural variants are missing. If you wish to have a PDF copy of the Word Judge for Clubs and Tournaments, let Maliha know so she can email you an updated version via Dropbox or WeTransfer.

1st Game Category: Bingo Words beginning with A.  This category must contain 7 letters to qualify.  It has double winning values: as a bingo (player must include it in the bingo list), and as an assigned category to qualify for the instant award.  The words were contributed by Gary Moss, and a few examples are here; look it up in your word lists available and your scrabble dictionaries.  This category is also for ‘ALL DAY CATEGORY Examples:   ABALONE ABANDON ABATING ABAXIAL ABAXILE ABBOTCY ABDOMEN ABDUCED ABELIAN ABETTAL ABETTED ABETTER ABETTOR ABEYANT ABFARAD ABHENRY ABIDING ABIGAIL ABILITY ABIOTIC ABJURED ABJURER ABLATED ABLATOR ABLUENT ABLUTED ABODING ABOLLAE ABORTED ABORTER ABOUGHT ABOULIA ABOULIC ABRADED ABRADER ABREACT ABRIDGE ABROACH, etc.
