Arshud,
It would have been so nice for all of us to gather at your house for Maliha’s birthday! I miss her as I’m sure everyone else does. And you are so right that she would not have liked this social distancing at all. She always wanted to hug each and every one of us. 🙂

If all goes well, getting together in August would be wonderful.

I hope you and your family are all doing well and being safe.

Warmly,
Yuki

Praised be Jesus Christ Now And Forever {PBJCNAF]. Hope everyone is well and hale, COVID free.
I was just lifting late beloved Maliha like i do for my dear departed in my daily prayers and Masses, lately via zoom and livestream, and remembering that last year at St Lawrence Martyr’s Church in Redondo Beach, i requested a Mass for her this coming June 5. Wow..time flew…and come to think back, her last email to me about Jesus was in August 7…and she’s up there in heaven, now please God and must have met late beloved John too….at least they’re not social distancing up there.
Take care everyone…as we keep our “shelter in place”.

Triunefiat,

Dear Friends:
With Maliha’s birthday coming up in two weeks, my thoughts turn to last year’s splendid birthday party all of you hosted for her at Laguna Woods – with Gretchen contriving to make her win at left-right-center. I was hoping we will get together at her birthday this year for lunch at our house – but with the virus situation it is an idle thought – which she never would have entertained.

She probably also would not have liked a world without social gatherings, and without scrabble parties. Let us see what the world will look like at her anniversary – August 21, and we may have a memorial luncheon on the following day- August 22, at our house. In the meantime, best of health to all of you, and keep her in your hearts.

Regards
Arshud Mahmood

Super Scrabble Players,

In light of the most recent advice from the health department to avoid unnecessary public gatherings during this Coronavirus Covid 19 pandemic, Evelyn and I have decided to cancel the Super Scrabble meetings until further notice. As much as we would like to have the meeting on March 19, we want to make sure everyone is safe. After all, Applebee’s is a pretty busy restaurant inside a mall.

Please be well, and take care of yourselves.

Hi, players.

There was an unusual situation that occurred in one of my games at the Super Scrabble club this past Thursday. My opponent overdrew, emptying the bag at the end of the game. I couldn’t remember the exact ruling for this situation, so we treated it as a regular overdraw. I emailed Jan Cardia, NASPA’s Rules Committee Chair, to ask for the ruling because I found conflicting rulings in my 2012 rules book and the current 2016 rules book. Below is Jan’s response. What should have happened in my game is the very bottom action. Hopefully, this situation won’t occur again, but if it does, you will know how to rectify it.
Yuki

IV.B.8. Overdrawing Tiles when Fewer than Seven in the Bag

1. If the overdraw happens and is discovered when it is the non-offending player’s turn to make a play, the standard X+2 penalty is applied for an overdraw, where X = the number of tiles overdrawn.

2. If the overdraw happens or is discovered when it is the offending player’s turn to make a play, the following penalty is applied, where X = the number of tiles overdrawn.

(a)If the offender has not combined any drawn tiles with the old tiles: the non-offender chooses X+2 of those tiles, up to the total number of tiles drawn, but does not expose them to the offender. Those tiles will then be combined with the non-offender’s tiles. The non-offender, within one minute, returns the appropriate number of tiles, of his/her choosing, from his/her rack, to the offender, and any tiles in excess of seven, of his/her choosing, will be returned to the bag without revealing them to the offender.

(b)If the offender has combined any drawn tiles with the old tiles: the non-offender chooses X+2 tiles from all of the opponent’s tiles. Two of those tiles will be returned to the offender’s rack. The remaining tiles, X, will then be combined with the non-offender’s tiles. The non-offender, within one minute, returns X tiles, of his/her choosing, from his/her rack, to the bag without revealing them to the offender.
