Standard

SEPTEMBER 2018 is a RENEWAL of our wholeheartedness ALL-DAY games with amazing friends having a lot of fun and joyful togetherness just like a happy scrabble family get-together, yet competing to better ourselves, maintain mental sharpness, and remain straightforward in memory.  September also marks the 6th year existence of the Superscrabble Club of Tustin in California. This is also a time to celebrate birthdays that happened in JULY and AUGUST.  We will sing a joint belated birthday song for: AMNON MEYERS [7/25], NANCY DOUGLAS [7/31], PAM STUBBLEFIELD [7/17], JEFF POLAN [8/27], GARY MOSS [8/20], and MIRIAM GREEN [8/4].  Birthday individuals, please let me know if you’re coming, so we can provide enjoyment for all.  It’s great to have a vacation and see Paris, Manila, my grandchildren, and my half-sister Donna from Sydney, Australia—all took place during the last two months.

This announcement and invitation to join our games for 9-20-18 require an RSVP.  Please call 714-544-4746 and leave a message if nobody can answer.  The venue is:  2130 Chandler Drive, Tustin 92782.  You may also text a message to Maliha at 714-654-4308 whether or not you’re coming. The space is limited.  Pairing begins at 10:00 a.m.  The following infos are for the newbies:  There is no fee; a volunteer teacher can show you how to play, and a “cheat” sheet will be allowed for the next 3 games.  There is no need to bring your equipment.  There are prizes to reward your memory sharpness–check out the 5-17-18 blog at superscrabble.wordpress.com. The prizes for some participants of the last games 6/21/18 are still with me.  We ran out of time, hence the director was unable to distribute the awards of the following players:  FERN TRAUSCH, PAT YARNELL, TINA UDELSON, BOB AGNEW, YUKI LORITZ, and NAJAT REIKES. Your envelopes are ready for pick up.

On 9-20-18, the instant reward for a word with 14 to 15+ letters will be worth $185; the 12- to 13-letter word will be $85.  To qualify for a reward in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and All-Day games category words, the valid word must contain 5 letters or more.  Winners of 3 games get $25; a bingo word is worth $1. Highest-point bingo is $5, high-point game is 1¢ per point [1250 pts = $12.50], highest-point cum is $10, and highest-point non-bingo word is $5.  Winners of 3 games are not qualified to win the high-point game and the high-point cum.  Everyone will get a chance to win something and have fun. Study the assigned categories to enjoy more awards. THE EXAMPLES BELOW are incomplete; some singular or plural variants are missing.  If DON PLATT is here, he’ll announce the categories; otherwise any volunteer is welcome.

1st game category:  PETS you want to have–including names of species – birds, reptiles, puppy:  GUENONS, LANGURS, CAPUCHINS, TARSIER, ANTHROPOID, PROSIMIAN, POTTO, PENGUIN, ELEPHANT, EAGLE, MONKEYS, SNAKES, HUMMINGBIRD, MACAQUE, PARROT, CHIMP, SPARROW, CATFISH, AARDVARK, CHEETAH, TIGER, WALLABY, KANGAROO, KOALA, DOGGIES, PUPPIES, ELEPHANT, BEARS, ORANGUTAN (WOW–if you can manage the size of the last 3 possible pets) etc.

2nd game category: PICNIC words — useful things you take along to a picnic somewhere in the park, beach, forest, desert, garden, etc.:  BASKET, PLATES, CUPCAKE, TABLECLOTH, CHAIRS, SALADS, FRUITS, BREAD, DRINKS, POPCORN, UMBRELLA, WATER, CAMERA, etc.

3rd game category:  PLACES you want to visit:  DESERT, FOREST, CEMETERY, THEATER, CHURCH, MUSEUM, ANCHORAGE, STADIUM, GARDEN, STORES, MALLS, LIBRARY, ZOARIA, BEACH, PARKS, TEXAS, MANILA, PARIS, CITADEL, TEMPLE, LIBRARY, MOSQUE, RIVERS, SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY, SHRINES, GROTTO, etc.

ALL DAY category:  Words containing –IFY word ending.  The letters must be together.  This list is only 1/3 of what Gary Moss has contributed (thanks to Gary):  ACETIFY ACIDIFY AERIFY ALKALIFY AMMONIFY AMPLIFY BASIFY BEATIFY BEAUTIFY BRUTIFY CALCIFY CARNIFY CERTIFY CITIFY CLARIFY CLASSIFY COALIFY CODIFY COPURIFY CORNIFY CRUCIFY DAMNIFY DANDIFY DEIFY DENAZIFY DENSIFY DETOXIFY DIGNIFY DULCIFY EDIFY EMULSIFY ESTERIFY ETHERIFY FALSIFY FANCIFY FORTIFY FRUCTIFY GASIFY GENTRIFY GLORIFY GRATIFY HORRIFY HUMIDIFY, etc.  You might have received his full list already, so make use of it.

LEARN a long word each day:  LARGEHEARTEDNESS has 16 letters.  Starting with ART, you may add HE in front to make it longer–HEART.  Or find EAR, ED, ES, ESS, ESSES, HART, HE, HEAR, HEART, HEARTED, LAR, LARGE, NESS, NESSES, TE, TED at the start.  How wonderful it is to be able to expand the word from many starting points.  Make it longer:  LARGEHEARTED, LARGENESS, LARGENESSES. It’s magical finding an 18-letter word:  LARGEHEARTEDNESSES.  This will fit in a 21×21 grid board.  You and your partner can make it happen.  If it does, you will be splitting the award. Yuki and Fern received the prize of $520 for the longest word they found last year:  MISUNDERSTANDINGS.  Each time we meet a gift of $5 is added to the pot.  Anybody is welcome to add in the POT any gift amount—thanks to Yuki who started the idea last year.  The POT will be near the sign-up book during the meeting. This incentive will add joy to our FUNNEST game in town.   The next meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2018.
