How to extend the 2s and 3s

Standard

Posted by Maliha Mendoza Mahmood

I’m writing this because a young man asked, (after seeing WORD JUDGE USA) “How come you’re not in the experts’ division in the regular club or in national tournaments?” All I could say was that I get attacked by a short-term memory problem every now-and-then, and by "senior moments." I can’t remember many words that I have typed, read or seen. But I have many ideas of how to conquer this obsession of learning words. I have to find a method that might work for me, and might work for you. The method can also be used while playing the standard Scrabble®, or while playing on the 21×21 board game at the Superscrabble Club in Tustin. Using the existing list of 2- and 3-letter words, and if you already know these by heart, I recommend to look at the board and focus on the existing words already played; see if there is a possibility of being able to extend it to make a longer word. Start with the following easy examples:

AA – basaltic lava having a rough surface.

Think of how you can expand this 2-letter word.

AAH, AAHED, AAHING, AAHS, AAL, AALII, AARDVARK, AARDVARKS, AARRGHH, AASVOGEL, AASVOGELS

How a bingo can be played?

AA + RDVARKS = AARDVARKS

AA + SVOGELS = AASVOGELS

BA – an aspect of the soul, symbolized in a human-headed bird.

BAA, BAAED, BAAING, BAAL, BAALIM, BAALISM, BAALISMS, BAALS.

If you have BBITTED on your rack, hook it to BA. Searching for 7 letters that can be hooked to BA, I found quite a few examples:

BA + BBITTED = BABBITTED

BA + BYISHLY = BABYISHLY

BA + CCHANTE = BACCHANTE

BA + CHELORS = BACHELORS

BA + CKDRAFT = BACKDRAFT

BA + CCHANAL = BACCHANALS

BA + CCHANTS = BACCHANTS

BA + CCIFORM = BACCIFORM

BA + CILLARY = BACILLARY

BA + CKACHES = BACKACHES

BA + CKBEATS = BACKBEATS

BA + CKBENCH = BACKBENCH

BA + CKBITER = BACKBITER

BA + CKBLOCK = BACKBLOCK

WORD JUDGE USA lists many words that begin with BA:

BACCHANTE, BACHELORS, BACKDRAFT, BACCATE, BACCATED, BACCHANAL, BACCHANALIA, BACCHANALIAN , BACCHANALIANS, BACCHANALS, BACCHANT, BACCHANTE, BACCHANTES, BACCHANTS, BACCHIC, BACCHII, BACCHIUS, BACCIFORM, BACH, BACHED, BACHELOR, BACHELORDOM , BACHELORDOMS, BACHELORETTE, BACHELORETTES, BACHELORHOOD, BACHELORHOODS, BACHELORS, BACHES, BACHING, BACILLAR, BACILLARY, BACILLI, BACILLUS, BACITRACIN, BACITRACINS, BACK, BACKACHE, BACKACHES, BACKBEAT, BACKBEATS, BACKBENCH, BACKBENCHER, BACKBENCHERS, BACKBENCHES, BACKBEND, BACKBENDS, BACKBIT, BACKBITE, BACKBITER, BACKBITERS, BACKBITES, BACKBITING, BACKBITINGS, BACKBITTEN, BACKBLOCK, BACKBLOCKS, BACKBOARD, BACKBOARDS, BACKBONE, BACKBONED, BACKBONES, BACKBREAKER, BACKBREAKERS , BACKBREAKING, BACKCAST, BACKCASTS, BACKCHAT, BACKCHATS, BACKCHECK, BACKCHECKED, BACKCHECKING, BACKCHECKS, BACKCLOTH, BACKCLOTHS, BACKCOUNTRIES, BACKCOUNTRY, BACKCOURT, BACKCOURTMAN, BACKCOURTMEN, BACKCOURTS, BACKCROSS, BACKCROSSED, BACKCROSSES, BACKCROSSING, BACKDATE, BACKDATED, BACKDATES, BACKDATING, BACKDOOR, BACKDRAFT, BACKDRAFTS, BACKDROP, BACKDROPPED, BACKDROPPING, BACKDROPS, BACKDROPT, BACKED

Mark your calendar: Superscrabble Games August 14, 2014. Please let me know if you’re coming via email, phone (714) 544-4746, cell phone, or text message (714) 654-4308. New comers are welcome.

We’ll be glad to show you how to play the most mentally exhilarating game in town. Three games: We start at 10:00 a.m., have a get-together lunch break; and two more games in the afternoon. All words played that

fits the category assigned must have 5 letters or more to qualify for a prize. This reminder also appears at the blog site. If you have a friend who did not receive a personal email due to some errors, kindly tell them

to see the announcement at the link; just click and it will take you there. Please see the entire list of words beginning with ERR: https://superscrabble.wordpress.com

If you have a favorite word list you’d like to share, please email it to me and I will post it at the blog site.

First game category is something to do with travelling. Examples: luggage, destination, totes, duffle, duffel, seatbelt, handbag, umbrella, coats, shoes, passport, trains, airport, boats, concourse, flight, etc.

Second game is pertaining to birthdays: nativity, firstborn, party, gifts, celebrate, happy, gifting, cakes, banquet, dance, zodiac, zodiacal signs, gemini, scorpio, libra, cancer, celebration, etc.

Third game is something to do with playing scrabble: board, tiles, scrabble, stats, score, sheets, cumulative, total, challenge, double, triple, counting, exchange, phoney, statistic, scrabble tourney, etc.

Learn a long word and plan to play it in multiple steps. BUFFALOBERRIES (14 letters) is a good example. The following breakdown can get you started: BUFF, FA, AL, LO, LOB, BUFFALO, LOBE,
ERR, BERRIES. Hey, be positive and focus on the possibilities. BUFFALOBERRIES might just pop up for you to taste, a North American bush with edible red or yellow berries.

The total in the box for words with 14+ letters is now @235. Example of 14+ letter-word: ETHEREALNESSES, ETHEREALIZATION (ether, real, ethereal, etherealness, etherealization, etc.). IZATION (7 letters)

but not acceptable to play by iteself; there’s a possibility that it may appear on your rack. An on-going challenge to all is finding the longest playable word!

All day category: Words starting with ERR. Examples: ERRABLE, ERRANCIES, ERRANCY, ERRAND, ERRANDS, ERRANT, ERRANTLY, ERRANTRIES, ERRANTRY, ERRANTS, ERRATA, ERRATAS,

ERRATIC, ERRATICAL, ERRATICALLY, ERRATICISM, ERRATICISMS, ERRATICS, ERRATUM, ERRED, ERRHINE, ERRHINES, ERRING, ERRINGLY, ERRONEOUS, ERRONEOUSLY, ERRONEOUSNESS,

ERRONEOUSNESSES, ERROR, ERRORLESS, ERRORS, ERRS.

Congratulations to Marcia Wade for getting the 1st place award, and to Gretchen Cowan for winning the “Best Performance Award” in TWL Div. C at the WGPO tournament in Madison, Wisconsin.

Congrats also to Margie Gordon for the 1st place winner of Gary’s limericks contest. Maliha also won the “Best Performance Award” in Collins Division.
